EdPlace resources are designed to support students throughout their entire academic journey from Year 1 to GCSE. Assessments are an essential ingredient in our approach to delivering effective online learning at EdPlace, as they help to identify areas of strength that can be challenged further and areas for further practice. This in turn helps you to maximise their learning time and subsequently the progress they make. Therefore, we are very excited to offer assessments for the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC).
What is the MTC?
Put simply the MTC or Multiplication Tables Check is an online assessment that tests students’ ability to recall the 1 to 12 times table within 25 questions. It was introduced to make sure that children were going to secondary school with strong times table knowledge as this understanding underpins many more advanced maths techniques. The assessment will be taken in June of Year 4.
The English National Curriculum for Maths clearly sets out at which key stages children should learn their times tables. Children learn their 2s, 5s and 10s in year 2, in year 3 their 3s, 4s and 8s, and by the time they get to year 4 they are expected to recall all of these as well as the 6s, 7s, 9s, 11s and 12 times tables.
How does it work?
This will be timed to test fluency - they will have 6 seconds to complete each question with a 3-second break in between each one. It is a quick test, generally only taking a couple of minutes to complete. Our MTC assessments can be undertaken multiple times, as the questions change each time, removing any chance that a child can memorise the order of the answers.
What is the EdPlace Approach?
The EdPlace approach is underpinned by our ethos of Learn, Practice, Revise, and a belief that students should scaffold up and avoid a hot housing approach to best build confidence.
The Learn section will offer times table practice for the relevant ages, i.e. separate 2,5 and 10 times table dynamic assessments are available for Year 2 students.
Our Practice approach similarly tests the separate times tables but this time includes a timer so that students can begin to put their understanding within a more realistic MTC setting, allowing them to improve their speed and recall.
The Revise approach will further build on the ‘practice’ approach by combining all of the relevant times tables for a year group. This offering best mirrors students' experience of the actual MTC and should be used in the lead up to the test in June.
How do I assign an EdPlace MTC Assessment?
Please watch the following video on how to assign an MTC assessment to your child or follow along reading the instructions below:
Log in to your parent account at https://www.edplace.com/parent/. Head to 'Browse and Assign' and you will see a matrix of all of our activities (you can select 'assessments' in the dropdown). Once you have clicked on the appropriate year group under 'Maths', make sure you are within the assessments tab to see a selection of MTC preparation activities:
You can choose to assign all activities within a section, or you can select particular ones before clicking ‘assign’. These will now appear in your child's to-do list under ‘assigned to you’.
How can I see the results?
You will be able to see the results immediately! Under 'Review completed' in your parent dashboard, you will see the MTC assessment they've just completed.
If you select the activity name, you can review the individual answers they gave. Alternatively, you can select the PDF icon to download a report similar to below:
