At EdPlace, we know that there is no 'one size fits all' approach to learning and that students are motivated to learn in different ways. Some students may be intrinsically motivated while others are extrinsically, and we try to support this within our accounts through the use of scores, badges and rewards. Rewards at EdPlace, are well-used in our parent accounts and often represent a personalised and tangible 'carrot'. They enable parents to set a customised reward that will best motivate their child.
When we created our teacher account, we made the conscious decision to remove the reward feature, as seen in our parent account.
We did this for the following reasons:
- The current reward categories offered were designed for parents to use on an individual basis and, therefore, primarily do not translate well to a school environment (e.g. a day trip, time on the computer, favourite food, etc.);
- Setting rewards on an individual basis within a class poses potential issues, could be difficult to implement and could present unnecessary administration;
- As teachers are able to 'share' students within their accounts, a situation could arise where they are offering competing rewards to the same student;
- Many schools already have their own rewards system in place, making this feature redundant.
Can I utilise the EdPlace features to support your own internal rewards system?
Yes! We really recommend that you make use of the work that students are doing on EdPlace and integrate this into your own school rewards approach.
How can I do this?
Each time a student completes an activity on EdPlace, we mark and track their progress automatically. This means that at any point, both you and your students can review their recent work. Students will receive a score for every activity, as well as points towards their running personal total. To understand more about the difference between scores and points, please view our article explaining this further here.
We recommend tying in these points, scores and badges (shown in every student's EdPlace account) to your own school rewards system, e.g. 200 points on EdPlace equates to 10 merits, epraise, vivos, etc. You really can use it however you wish, to support your own school rewards set-up.
We believe that schools know best how to motivate and reward their students, so we wanted to support only our motivation features which could easily be adapted. If you've got any ideas on how we could further improve our features on-site to support your rewards system in school, we'd love to hear from you. Similarly, if you have any examples of EdPlace effectively contributing towards your school rewards system, please do share this with our friendly Customer Support Team at email@example.com.
